Program Description
Healthcare 101 – Introduction to Healthcare Financial Management
This seminar will give attendees the insight and tools needed to master the unique aspects of healthcare finance. Michael Nowicki will share his knowledge of Medicare and other payer issues, healthcare financial management processes, top concerns facing healthcare finance professionals and more. Attendees will also have time to network and share experiences with other new colleagues in healthcare finance.
After this seminar, attendees will be able to:
- Understand the healthcare industry from the perspective of providers and payers.
- Recognize the unique financial management techniques, operational processes and reporting aspects used within healthcare organizations.
- Discuss major national issues affecting the healthcare industry and their impact on healthcare organizations.
- Understand how the Medicare and managed care payment systems affect the economics and operations of healthcare providers.
- Understand the latest developments and the most current predictions on payment and financing systems.
Who Should Attend
This seminar is designed for those who have accounting and financial management experience, have entered the healthcare field within the past 12 months to 36 months and want an overview of healthcare financial management. This seminar is also ideal for consultants and professionals in allied organizations newly assigned to healthcare clients.

Faculty - Michael Nowicki, FHFMA, EdD, FACHE, Professor of Health Administration, Texas State University (San Antonio, Washington, Nashville)
Since 1986, Michael Nowicki has taught in the School of Health Administration at Texas State University where he is now Professor and Director of the School. Dr. Nowicki teaches healthcare accounting, finance, and economics courses to both undergraduate students and graduate students. Dr. Nowicki has received numerous awards for his teaching, service, and research. Prior to joining Texas State, Dr. Nowicki held administrative positions in the hospital division of Humana, Valley Medical Center of Fresno, Hutzel Hospital in the Detroit Medical Center, Georgetown Medical Center, and Lubbock Medical Center. Dr. Nowicki has recently provided consulting and training support to such provider organizations as HCA, University Hospitals of Cleveland, Mercy Hospitals of Northern Ohio, and the Baylor Healthcare System and such associations as the American Hospital Association, HFMA, ACHE, VHA, and THA. Dr. Nowicki is board certified in healthcare financial management and a Fellow in the Healthcare Financial Management Association where he has served as President of the South Texas Chapter, Regional Executive for five-state Region 9, National Board Member, Chairman of the Chapter Services Council, Chairman of the Forums Council, and Chairman of the Board of Examiners. Dr. Nowicki is also board certified in healthcare management and a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
